Paul Nelson was a Professor Emeritus at the University of California, Davis, and a key figure in the development and promotion of the Integrated Aqua-Vegetable System (IAVS).

Nelson was a renowned horticulturist and was known for his work on greenhouse operation and management. Nelson's involvement with the IAVS system began in the 1980s when he provided greenhouse space for the research. He continued to support the system as a valued advisor, mentor, and co-author for the next ten years.

Nelson's expertise in horticulture was instrumental in the development of the IAVS system, and his contributions helped to refine the system and make it more effective. Nelson was also involved in the development of sustainable agriculture practices more broadly. He was a prolific author and published numerous articles and papers on topics related to horticulture, greenhouse management, and sustainable agriculture.

He was also a frequent speaker at conferences and workshops and was known for his ability to communicate complex scientific concepts in an accessible way. In addition to his work with the IAVS system, Nelson was involved in a variety of other sustainable agriculture projects. He was a Fellow of the American Society of Horticultural Science and was awarded the Society's Outstanding Educator Award in 1995. He was also a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and was awarded the Society's prestigious Fellow Award in 1996.
